History of Department

Department of Pediatrics has been started since 2018 may.

Paediatrics

The course lasts for two years starting from the Final Part I and continues until the end of Final Part II. Paediatric teaching is confined mainly to hospital practice, with community orientation and exposure to community health centers, coordinated with Taunggyi Divisional Health Department and Department of Preventive & Social Medicine of the University of Medicine, Taunggyi.

The important topics in Pediatrics include development pediatrics, preventive and social pediatrics, neonatology, pediatric emergencies, common childhood disorders and infections. Emphasis is laid on common health problems of our country, e.g., acute respiratory tract infections, diarrhoeal diseases, hengue haemorrhagic fever, malaria, neonatal sepsis and jaundice, malnujtrition, and care of the normal  and sick children, Knowledge and skill in pediatrics is imparted by lectures, seminars, bedside teaching, tutorials, problem solving, and small group teaching during the final years part I and II.

A clinical test (OSCE) is conducted at the end of Final part I posting. During the block posting in final year part II, one theory test (5MSQs and 60 MCQs) and one clinical test (OSCE) is conducted at mid-term and the second theory paper (5  MSQs and 60 MCQs ) along with a clinical (OSCE) test is conducted at the end of posting period.

At the final evaluation, a qualifying examination  consisting of two theory papers (5 MSQs and 60 MCQs each) and a clinical test (OSCE) is held.

LEVEL OBJECTIVED of Year – Final Part I MBBS

At the end of the course of instruction , the learner must be able to:

Acquire the knowledge of

Paediatrics and essential facts about common medical problems in childhood and adolescent, using PHC approach.

Acquire the skill of

  1. Approaching and dealing with the healthy newborn and sick babies, infants children and their parents
  2. Taking careful history
  3. Performing thorough examination of all systems

Acquire the attitude of

  1. The acceptance of comprehensive health care aspect of childeren
  2. The development of the appreciation of practice of delivering appropriate health education regarding common childhood illnesses.

LEVEL OBJECTIVES of Year – Final Part II MBBS

At the end of the course of instruction, the learner must be able to

Acquire the knowledge of

  1. Child Health and Adolescent Health
  2. Essential facts about medical problems in childhood and adolescent
  3. Management of childhood problems using primary health care approach

Acquire the skill of

  1. Communicating with the healthy and sick newborn babies, infants, children, adolescents and their parents
  2. Taking careful history
  3. Performing thorough physical examination of all systems
  4. Performing simple bedside procedures and laboratory procedures
  5. Management of common childhood problems and disorders
  6. Practicing preventive health education regarding common childhood illnesses and common adolescent problems.

Acquire the attitude of

  1. Appreciation of practice and responsibility of the various branches of health. Social and educationl services concerning with care of the healthy children and adolescents, sick and handicapped children
  2. Developing an appreciation of the value of maternal and child care
  3. Having essential habits of applying scientific methods in approaching and solving problems
  4. Accepting the comprehensive health care aspects of children, families and the community.

LEVEL OBJECTIVE of Internship Training (House Officer)

Hourse officers are posted to the affiliated teaching hospitals for their training. The training period covers one year as rotating house officers between 4 major disciplines ( 3 months in Pediatric department including 2 weeks of community medicine work) Assessment is by means of a common log book in all disciplines and a completion certificate signed by Heads of the major disciplines, reviewed by the Rector of the Institute before convocation.

  3. Performing through physical examination of all systems.
  4. Performing simple bed side procedures and laboratory procedures.
  5. Recognizing urgent cases that require referral
  6. Managing of common childhood problems, disorders and paediatric emergencies.
  7. Practicing preventive aspects of child health.
  8. Delivering appropriate health education regarding common childhood illnesses.

Acqurer the attitude of

  1. Appreciation of practice and responsibilities of the various branches of health, social and educational services concerned with care of healthy, sick, handicapped children.
  2. Developing an appreciation of the value of maternal and child care.
  3. Havin essential habits of applying scientific methods in apporaching and solving problems.
  4. Accepting the comprehensive health care aspect of children, families and the community.

Monthly/Future Programme

Pediatric department will be well established in near future for recruitment of medical staffs & preparation of Final part 1 pediatric class which will be opened in 2019 June and Final Part 2 pediatric class, which will also be opened in 2020.
